Who can register with the GCN website?

The GCN website is open to all government communicators and other civil servants who do not work in communication roles.

If you work for a non-departmental government body (NDPB) you can also become a member of GCN or register as a civil servant.

You can become a member of GCN if you are a current UK civil servant and the main purpose of your job is government communication.

This includes all the following disciplines, roles and activities:

  • media monitoring
  • press officers
  • PR units
  • intranet teams
  • web editing
  • web development (content and navigation, not technical considerations)
  • e-communications
  • newsletter editing
  • internal communications
  • publications
  • print buying
  • video production
  • branding
  • strategic communications
  • design
  • event management
  • research
  • marketing and paid publicity (including direct and relationship marketing, advertising and sponsorship)
  • stakeholder management
  • writing (including speechwriting)
  • sponsorship management
  • public affairs

If you are not sure if you are a government communicator, please talk to the Head of Profession in your department or email gcn@cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk

You can also register if you are a current UK civil servant, but you do not work in a communication role.

You will be able to view and receive email alerts for job vacancies. You will not have access to some of the networking areas of the site which are only available to government communicators. You can also select this option if you work for a non-departmental government body (NDPB).
